Two Levels of Involvement
All faculty at the University of Alaska are required to join the union. The Dues Deduction Form offers two membership options: Full Membership or Agency Fee. Dues for full members amount to 1.25% of your gross salary. Dues for agency fee payers are slightly lower at 1.11%. All dues are deducted on a bi-weekly basis from your University paycheck.
Both Full Membership and Agency Fee status provides unit members with the full protection
of the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiated between United Academics and the University of Alaska. This includes, but is not limited to:
- participation in salary increases resulting from negotiations
- safeguarding of benefits such as healthcare coverage, sabbatical leave, and professional travel
- counsel when seeking career advancement and tenure attainment
- advocacy during grievances resulting from violations by the University of procedures contained within the Collective Bargaining Agreement, University policy, Board of Regents’ regulation, and/or state statutes
- representation in any case where administrative attempts to sanction faculty members are encountered
- protection of Academic Freedom
Joining as a Full Member grants you additional opportunities to participate directly in key aspects of the union. Full Members help shape the development of United Academics by voting in elections for statewide officers as well as elections for the Vice-Presidents and members of the Representative Assemble on each campus. Serving on one of the union’s various committees, such as the Joint Health Care Committee or the team that negotiates the Collective Bargaining Agreement, presents a chance to contribute significantly to our organization. Full Members can also run for and hold elective office at any level of the union, thus gaining a direct voice in making and implementing United Academics’ policies. Finally, Full Members have the ability to vote on important issues, including the approval of newly negotiated Collective Bargaining Agreements and amendments to the United Academics’ constitution.
The more faculty members become involved in United Academics, the stronger our organization will be. A strong organization means a strong contract, better working conditions, and an improved University of Alaska for faculty and students alike. Please take the time to enroll or upgrade your status to Full Membership today.
