Why We Serve

I am serving as an RA because we need to be proactive in setting the policies that shape our work environment. I feel that I could not rely on others to take care of things for me, that I needed to do my share in this process. There are too many important issues related to salary and benefits, but also academic freedom, and our ability to make decisions about our work beyond the classroom or lab.”

I am interested in being involved with the United Academics leadership because it is a key component to the creation of a positive work environment for myself and my colleagues. Having good working conditions and benefits directly influence the ability to recruit, retain, and better develop careers for faculty members at UAA and throughout the UA system. I am a reasonable person who can function within the administratively complex and overlapping arenas which involve working conditions and benefits.”

I serve, simply, because I’m committed to the idea of labor unions.  I’ve been involved with the labor movement since I started working–and serving on the RA seems like the logical next step.  As a graduate student at the University of Oregon, moreover, I served as the English department shop steward for four years with the Graduate Teaching Fellows Federation, a branch of the American Federation of Teachers.  Based on this experience, I believe not only that unions are imperative for ensuring equitable and just workplace practices, but that academic situations require careful consideration.”
