Why should UA faculty and postdocs join UNAC as a full member?
Enforcing the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) negotiated between United Academics and the University of Alaska is not easy work, and it definitely doesn’t come for free. Without dues paying members, we would not exist as a union, and the union protections enjoyed by our bargaining unit members would not exist. These protections include, but are not limited to:
- representation in cases when the University administration attempts to sanction faculty members
- advocacy when problems arise from a violation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), University policy, Board of Regents policy and regulation, and/or Alaska state statutes
- protection of academic freedom
- enforcement of due process and just cause procedures during disciplinary investigations
- increased minimum salaries and annual across-the-board salary increases
- access to the UNAC sick leave bank
- advice when seeking career advancement, including obtaining tenure and/or promotion
Joining as a full member grants you additional opportunities to steer the direction of your union:
- vote in elections for statewide officers, Vice Presidents (Org VPs), and members of the Representative Assembly (RA) for each university
- vote on contract ratification and amendments to our union constitution
- serve on one of our various committees: Legislative Relations Committee; Membership, Organizing, & Communications Committee; Collective Bargaining Committee, Joint Health Care Committee; Non-Tenure Track Committee
- run for and hold elective office at any level of the union
With more faculty members directly involved in United Academics, our organization will be stronger. Period.
A stronger UNAC membership leads to a stronger position in collective bargaining, better working conditions, and an improved University of Alaska system–for all employees and for our students!
